Powder coating

Our coloured steel products have a powder coated finish. They are sand blasted, primed and powder coated locally in Tamworth. Powder coating provides a durable, protective, and decorative finish. The coating is resistant to scratching, chipping, peeling and fading. If the coating is compromised this may cause rust to develop.

Clean powder coated items every few months, with a soft cloth, mild detergent and warm water to remove dirt, dust, salt or residue. Do not use abrasive products as this may damage the coating. For stubborn spots, use only isopropyl alcohol or methylated spirits on the affected area and then rinse.

Weathering steel

Our rustic steel products are created from weathering steel. This has a protective layer that will oxidise to a rust-like finish when exposed to weather in most conditions. The product will self-seal to provide durability and corrosion resistance, creating a natural, warm, earthy rustic appearance over time to compliment every home or garden space.

Things you should know about your weathering steel product;

We go to great efforts to pre-weather our stock items. On occasions, due to stock availability, items may not be pre-weathered prior to shipping. This also applies to custom orders. Freshly laser cut items will be raw steel (grey metal in colour). Rest assured, the steel will commence “weathering” once exposed to moisture, that’s what its designed to do.

Product colour variations happen. This is due to different sourced material, age and stage of natural rusting as well as natural effects during pre-weathering such as falling blossoms or leaves during storms.

During the early stages of weathering, rust residue may stain surfaces. Remember this during placement of your product. Use a tile or similar on a flat surface to avoid disappointment. Standoffs on a wall for signage are advisable to avoid rust stains venturing down your wall.

Depending on your climate, your product may benefit from a light mist of water daily, to achieve maximum rusting effect. It will rust develop quicker in a horizontal position. Leaves or other items resting on the product when it is wet may leave short term marks until the product seals.

Be patient as the rusting “weathering” process does take time. It may may take up to 18 months to self-seal, depending on your climate and how often the surface is wet/dry.

If you don’t want the patina surface to develop, Penetrol (available from hardware or paint stores) can be applied as a rust preventative, which may slow (not stop) the patina process.

Product Installation

Our products take various forms, from metal wall art to garden stakes. Whilst installation is generally straight forward, see this guide if further assistance is required.

Wall art and signs

Small hanging products have a jute string included/attached for easy hanging. Unlike weathering steel, the string will not last a lifetime and you may need to replace this at some point - especially if the product is freely moving.

Other hanging products or signs have pre-cut holes either in the centre or on either side to fix to a surface or hang on a hook. Screws and hooks are not included as these are specific to the surface you are fixing to ie metal, timber.

Large hanging products do not have a string included due to their weight. These can be hung directly on an appropriate hook.

Garden stakes & fence toppers

All items have a fixed stake for your convenience.

Small items have a short V stake which you can simply insert into soil to anchor your product. Medium to large items have a welded short or long stake attached that can be inserted into soil.

Our range of bird ‘fence toppers’ all have a small folded flange with a pre-cut hole. Screws are not included as these are specific to the surface you are fixing to ie metal, timber.
