Choosing Your Custom Metal Sign

Choosing a custom sign is exciting! A personalised sign can bring soul, story, and style to your space — or perhaps you simply need a clean, functional design that serves a purpose. To help us provide the fastest and most accurate quote, focus on these key points when preparing your enquiry:

1. What Size Do You Need?

Measure the space where your sign will go. The size and scale should suit both where it will be viewed from and its intended purpose.

Viewing Distance

A property sign viewed from the road needs to be larger than a plaque viewed on a porch. For wall signs, eye height is usually ideal, but consider any furniture beneath it and the amount of blank (“negative”) space around the design.

Positioning

Think about the orientation of your space - vertical or horizontal. Try cutting cardboard templates in different sizes or outlining the sign area with masking tape to visualise how it fits. View it at various times of the day and from different angles.

Purpose

Is the sign for identification (a house number), decoration (garden art), direction (“Woolshed,” “Beware of Dog”), or business branding (a logo or shopfront sign).

Dimensions

Choose from the sizes listed in our form, or provide approximate measurements (e.g. 600mm H x 1000mm W). If you’re unsure, it’s often better to go slightly larger to make more of a statement.

2. Which Material is Best?

Your choice of material influences the sign’s look, durability, and price. Consider both the aesthetic you want and the environment where it will be installed.

Weathering Steel (Corten)

Rustic, earthy, and deep orange-brown.

Excellent for outdoor settings; develops a protective, maintenance-free patina.

Mild Steel

Raw grey finish.

Budget-friendly; best if you plan to paint or powder-coat the sign yourself.

Stainless Steel

Sleek, modern silver tone.

Highly corrosion-resistant; ideal for coastal or high-moisture environments. Higher price point.

3. What Is the Design & Detail?

The complexity of your text and imagery affects both the cost and how well your design translates to metal.

Design Choices

Do you want text only (e.g. a property name), imagery only, or a combination (e.g. farm scene with wording or logo)?

Browse our range of custom designs and garden art for inspiration - you might find elements to incorporate.

Image Detail

Highly detailed or intricate designs may need to be simplified to maintain structural integrity.

Keep in mind that photos or sketches often include perspective or detail that may not translate well into metal.

Accuracy

Double-check spelling, font preferences, and layout ideas.

If your sign will attach to wall cladding, pre-cut corner holes might not align perfectly - you may prefer to drill holes on-site for a custom fit.
